New test render

New test render using similar 3d text technique as the earlier one. Added a red background to fit in more with the color scheme of the club as well as a light in after effects to add a bit more dynamic to the text and background.

I also added some cutout illustrations on the background to add further depth to it and add to the visuals other than just text which may not appeal to everyone.

I removed the amount of text on the scene as the preview tests had from 50-100 layers of text which slowed rendering considerably and was a lot harder to manage.  I now used 20 layers which was a lot more manageable and also easier to read each of them. I cut out the runners up layers which may of left a negative feeling on the work with the camera focusing on times when forest failed to win.

I added some sound clips over the music of commentary from historic moments related to the club and more specifically the person in the background. I still need to adjust sound levels and I am still not 100% on the music choice as it feels too serious but I have edited around that track so far so may stick with it.

I still plan to adjust some of the text layers to avoid too much overlapping as this was just a test render to see how it looked and compared to previous ones but I fairly happy with its progress and the atmosphere it gives.

Client: End scene test with sound

This is my end shot for my client project so far. I feel the transition in music really works with the shot and I am happy with ending it with a clear message that Nottingham loves Forest.

The stadium has been rendered in a paint and ink style texture which gives a cartoon look. I feel this helps appeal to a younger audience. Although the huge increase in 3d visuals has closed the gap on reality and 3d a younger viewer will relate to a artistic cartoon style and also may not fully understand photorealism and lighting so it is not as important. I preferably did want to make it look more realistic but I had a few problems with the texturing and lighting in mental ray as well as some huge rendering times. With deadlines approaching it was a smart move to revert back to the style I am using.

I still plan to try and texture and light the scene realistically for portfolio purposes but for this project I think it works how it is.

Client: Motion graphic test scene

Possible opening scene for my client project for Nottingham loves Forest. It has been reiterated that the message is clear at the beginning, middle and end so i  did not want to leave anything to guess and be straight up with the point that this is about Nottingham Forest football club.

Thought it was good to use a sound clip of the commentators from when Forest won the european cup as this adds atmosphere to the video and also can relate to potential older viewers who possibly remember the moment or have seen it.

As this is aimed at a younger audience and to educate them I decided to not over complicate any shot or fill the page up with too much going on at once.

Learnt some basic motion graphics from tutorials which have helped greatly in this project. I am still unsure on some of the movement on the back to back text which I will possibly work on but so far I am happy with how this looks. It looks informative and clear and the text animation keeps it fun.

I am still considering possibly changing the music to fit the younger audience however the one I have picked goes well with the club having history and heritage. The audio also changes significantly at the end which fits in perfectly with my final shot.

Research: Artefact 1 early test

Early low quality render of a possible clip for my first artefact testing the principles of cinematography on a virtual environment. Testing a flat tracking shot against a angled shot with the lines converging to the right.

Client : Intro test with sound

Added sound to get a better idea of how fast i want the text to move and when to stop. Also gives me a better idea on the composition itself and what i need to improve upon. So far I'm happy just need to give another go at adding the logo as last time i tried it didn't quite turn out to plan but thats because of the camera position it was left in.

Artefact 1: Early waverly model for artifact one

Artefact one of my research project tests out the principles of camera angles in cinematography on a virtual environment. I decided to use the Waverly building as it is the building I am in every day and is easy to reference from. It is also a very old building with a lot of history and it is coming up to its 150th year. I have found it hard to model while completing my client project but now I have got it under way it is coming along fairly well. I am hoping to finish the model in the next few days so I can test out different camera angles and start building up my first artefact.

Nottingham client intro test

Test render for the intro for my nottingham loves client project. Done using various scripts from aescripts.com and a tutorial which has helped me greatly. Still need to add sound which was meant to render out with it .

I also need to add the logo at the end as well as various little touch ups to make it a much better piece of work. At the moment I am generally happy with how it flows with just some adjustment of text positions needed.

Scripts used:

1. 3D Text Creator Script (download 3D_text_creator_from_file.jsx)
2. 3D Layer Distributor Script (download 3D_text_creator_from_file.jsx)

Cel shade texture test

As my client project is aimed more towards a younger audience it seemed texturing my model as photorealistic would not be necessary. I experimented using a cel shading technique using the paint and ink textures in 3dsmax. I rendered out 2 shots of the same camera angle using scanline and mental ray. Mental ray shown to have a lot smoother lines and a more finished look to it.

Early camera test

A quick camera test of the panning shot I plan to use at the end of my animation. Only a very early version of my model as that is proving to be more complicated than I thought. By testing the camera out I can get a better idea if the size of the model is correct.

Learning Maya

Restarting an old project for the purpose of learning Maya. Although my 3rd year projects will mainly consist of 3D environments learning Maya through character modelling will help me understand the program and be able to incorporate that into my work. Having learned 3dsmax last year a lot of this feels familiar and with a better interface. I am using the old pictures I used for my Ninja Turtle projects to see how I have progressed since doing it the first time.
